12 Attacks on Tankers in Hormuz in One Week, Highest Since War Began

Three maritime security sources revealed that at least 12 attacks occurred on oil, natural gas, and liquefied gas tankers near the Strait of Hormuz between September 28 and October 5, marking the highest weekly total since the start of the US war with Iran on February 28. A Reuters report stated that this tally places last week at the top of the most dangerous weeks for navigation in one of the world's most vital energy corridors.

The International Maritime Organization recorded nine incidents involving ships during the same week, a figure separate from the security sources' estimates. India's Ministry of External Affairs said 12 crew members were injured when an unidentified projectile struck a Panama-flagged tanker named "On Peace", in an incident highlighting the vulnerability of commercial ship crews while transiting the passage.

In the same context, the Joint Maritime Information Center, led by the US Navy, stated that Iranian movements continue to demonstrate an intent to assert presence along main transit lanes. This assessment comes amid escalating risks to vessels carrying crude and gas through the strait, which handles a significant portion of global energy supplies.

Energy market traders are closely watching these developments, as continued attacks could prompt shipping companies to alter routes or raise voyage insurance premiums, reflecting on the cost of transporting oil and gas and adding pressure on global energy prices in the coming period.
