China Doubles Down on Semiconductor and AI Investments Despite US Restrictions
China continues to pour massive investments into the semiconductor sector and artificial intelligence infrastructure, escalating its efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in the face of US restrictions.

China continues to pour massive investments into the semiconductor sector and artificial intelligence infrastructure, as US restrictions on exporting advanced chips to it escalate, in an effort to curb its technological dependency on foreign sources.
China is injecting large-scale public and private funds into the domestic chip industry, through initiatives such as the Big Fund (National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund), aimed at building local capabilities capable of meeting the growing demand for AI chips.
These efforts face fundamental challenges, as China remains several years behind the global technological edge in chip manufacturing, while US restrictions on machinery and raw materials hinder its access to the latest technologies.
Analysts believe that China's ability to bypass these restrictions will mainly depend on the extent of its success in developing chip manufacturing tools locally or finding alternative partners outside the sphere of US influence.
What do these terms mean?
Semiconductors (Chips): Micro-electronic components that form the heart of all digital devices from smartphones to cars and weapons, representing the most prominent global technological competition axis in the current decade.
US Chip Export Restrictions: Restrictions imposed by the US Department of Commerce that ban the export of advanced semiconductors and manufacturing machinery to China, aiming to slow its military and technological progress.
Technological Self-Sufficiency: A policy through which China seeks to reduce its reliance on foreign technology in sensitive sectors such as chips, software, and telecommunications, to safeguard itself against the impact of external sanctions and restrictions.
