US-China Trade Drops 30% as Chinese Goods Flood European Markets

The volume of bilateral trade between the United States and China dropped by nearly 30% compared to pre-trade war levels, amid an ongoing escalation of tariffs from both sides that has led to a radical redrawing of the global trade map.

Faced with declining exports to the US market, China shifted its focus toward European markets, with its exports surging by more than 20% year-on-year during the first half of 2026. The European Union has come to absorb massive quantities of Chinese goods that were originally bound for the United States.

McKinsey and UNCTAD reports describe this shift as structural rather than temporary, as the reshaping of global supply chains accelerates and regional trade blocs entrench themselves, signaling an imminent European-Chinese trade confrontation amid growing pressure on European industries.

Analysts believe that China has succeeded in turning American pressure into an opportunity to expand its trade influence in Europe, however, this flood of cheap goods threatens European industries and makes a new wave of European tariffs against Beijing likely.

What do these terms mean?

Trade War: An economic dispute in which countries impose high tariffs and import restrictions on one another, reducing trade volume and raising product prices for consumers in both nations.

Global Supply Chains: A network of factories, suppliers, and distributors that connects the stages of manufacturing a good from raw materials to a final product across multiple countries. Redrawing them means relocating factories and altering entire supply routes.

Tariffs: A tax imposed by a country on imported goods. Raising tariffs protects local products from foreign competition, but it increases commodity prices for the final consumer and fuels tensions between nations.
