Japan Injected $34 Billion into the Market to Halt the Yen's Decline Past 160

The Japanese government intervened in foreign exchange markets by injecting an estimated $34 billion to limit the yen's decline against the dollar, seeking to prevent the currency from sustainably settling above the 160 yen per dollar level.

These interventions kept the yen near the 160 threshold, but they slowed the pace of its slide rather than reversing it, indicating that Japan's Ministry of Finance lacks sufficient tools to change the currency's underlying trend without support from interest rate hikes.

Analysts believe the effectiveness of intervention remains limited in the absence of concerted fiscal and monetary policies, as the gap between high US interest rates and low Japanese rates remains the main driver of the yen's weakness.

These data put the Bank of Japan under growing pressure to raise interest rates faster, amid a continuous depletion of foreign reserves without achieving a real turnaround in the yen's trajectory.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Foreign Exchange Market Intervention: An action taken by a central bank or government to buy or sell its national currency in international markets to influence its exchange rate. It depletes foreign reserves when buying the national currency.

Foreign Reserves: Assets in foreign currencies held by the central bank to finance trade and meet international obligations. Japan holds the second-largest reserves in the world.

Interest Rate Gap: The difference between interest rates in two countries. When US interest rates are higher than Japan's, investors prefer the dollar over the yen, weakening the latter.
