Shipping Lines Reportedly Add 6-7% Transpacific Capacity Ahead of China's Golden Week

Major ocean shipping lines have reportedly announced plans to add 6 to 7% capacity on transpacific routes in a proactive move to absorb the seasonal demand surge that typically accompanies China's Golden Week season and the preceding acceleration in cargo shipments.

China's Golden Week takes place annually in early October and represents a sharp turning point in trade activity, as exports of electronics, textiles, and consumer goods accelerate weeks prior in anticipation of factory closures during the holiday period.

This increase in capacity casts a shadow over freight rates that are already under pressure at high levels, while destination ports such as Los Angeles and Seattle are experiencing mounting pressure on discharge berth and storage capacity.

Logistics analysts noted that the added capacity could be accompanied by new waves of congestion at US West Coast ports, potentially prolonging wait times and multiplying additional costs for American and European importers sourcing goods from China.

Outlooks remain conditional on the stability of Chinese export demand levels, which have been affected by domestic economic pressures and declining demand in some Western markets, as any slowdown could lead to a temporary capacity surplus that depresses prices sharply, according to reports.
