Newmont Pays $1.95 Billion and Consents to Barrick's IPO

Newmont Corporation agreed to pay $1.95 billion in cash to Barrick Gold Corporation as part of an agreement package announced on August 10, which also included asset contributions and broader governance rights, according to the "Mine Listings" website.

Under the agreement, Barrick contributes the Fourmile exploration project, while Newmont contributes the "Mike" and "Fiberline" development projects, which are assets that were excluded from "Nevada Gold Mines." The agreement gives Newmont a larger role in managing the joint venture and resolves existing disputes regarding it.

In the same context, the agreement included Newmont's approval for Barrick to sell a minority stake in a new company comprising its gold assets in North America, including its stake in "Nevada Gold Mines," the operating "Pueblo Viejo" mine, Fourmile, and other exploration assets. Barrick owns 61.5% of "Nevada Gold Mines" and operates it, while Newmont owns 38.5%.

The report warned against reading the $1.95 billion figure as a standalone valuation for the Fourmile project, because the deal includes contributions of mining assets, governance changes, and dispute settlements without a clear allocation of the amount across these elements. Barrick aims to complete the listing before the end of 2026, subject to market conditions and approvals.
