The Baltic Dry Index rose about 0.3% to reach 3,148 points in its second consecutive session of gains, according to data from the "Trading Economics" platform released on October 2, after halting a four-session losing streak.
The giant Capesize vessel sector led the rise, recording 5,042 points, up 0.6%, while the "Panamax" index fell 0.3% to 2,372 points, and the "Supramax" index dropped 0.3% to 1,789 points, meaning the improvement came solely from the largest category.
Despite daily gains in the last two sessions, the index ended the week down 8.1%, illustrating that the recent recovery remained limited compared to the scale of the daily declines recorded over the past week.
The Baltic Index represents a key measure of the cost of transporting dry bulk cargo such as iron ore, coal, and grain, serving as an important benchmark for Arab markets that rely on it to assess global trade movement, raw material demand levels, and shipping costs. The index's direction in the coming weeks will serve as an early indicator of the recovery or decline in Chinese demand for raw materials.
What do these terms mean?
The Baltic Dry Index is a daily measure of the cost of transporting dry bulk materials by sea. Capesize vessels are the largest and mainly transport iron ore and coal. Panamax and Supramax are smaller categories that transport grains and light materials. Points here are the unit of measurement for the index, not a dollar price, and their rise means that shipping prices are rising. As for a session, it refers to a single trading day, and a second session of gains means an improvement across two consecutive days.
