Reddit Ends Free Access to Its Public Data in March 2027

On September 30, Reddit published a timeline for ending free access to its public data API, stipulating that accepting new access requests will halt on October 31, 2026, RSS feeds will end on November 13, and registration for the migration bounty program will close on November 30. After that, access will begin to gradually shut down for unregistered applications and users on January 12, 2027, before remaining public access ends in March 2027.

The platform announced that more than 14,000 applications and bots registered to transition to Devvit, its developer platform, which is an environment running on TypeScript and does not support Python. This poses an obstacle because most existing bots are built on the PRAW library written in Python. The migration bounty is $1,000 for each eligible application under a $1 million program, with additional funding from the developer fund reaching up to $167,000 per application.

Financial figures reveal the reason behind the shift, as the "other revenue" line item—under which data licensing falls—grew 24% annually to $43 million in the second quarter, representing about 5.3% of total revenue for the period of $804.9 million, compared to advertising growth of 64% to $762 million. Data licensing agreements trace back to 2024, most notably two deals with Google and OpenAI.

This shift affects researchers and entities relying on Reddit data to monitor public opinion, as feeds are no longer an alternative to the API, while there is no announced alternative for non-moderators. It also impacts marketing agencies and social monitoring services in the Arab region that build their reports on the platform's content, because closing free access increases the cost of data collection or limits its scope.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Application Programming Interface (API): A technical channel that allows external software to request data or execute an action in a service automatically, used in building applications and bots.

Devvit: Reddit's developer platform on which bots and moderation tools are built, running on TypeScript without support for Python.

RSS Feed: A simplified format that publishes summaries of new content on a website that any software can follow for updates, used in monitoring and archiving.

Data Licensing: A paid agreement under which a website grants the right to commercially use its data to a third party, compensating for part of the value of the produced content.
