'Sell on the News'... South Korean Space Stocks Drop Despite 'Nuri' Success

South Korean aerospace stocks failed to hold onto their gains following the successful fifth launch of the Nuri rocket, facing a sell-off in the October 7 session that analysts attributed to selling after the expiration of a catalyst, according to the SEDaily newspaper.

Shares of Hanwha Aerospace dropped 4.50% to 977,000 won, while Korea Aerospace Industries fell 5.34%, Kencoa Aerospace slipped 8.60%, and Satrec Initiative tumbled 8.96%.

Foreign brokerage firms, including CLSA, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley, were among the top sellers during the session, indicating that the selling pressure stemmed primarily from foreign institutional investors rather than retail traders alone.

This contrast between the technical success of the mission and the drop in stock prices reflects a "sell on the news" pattern, where investors buy in anticipation of an event and then sell upon its occurrence to realize profits. This explains why the stocks lost their pre-launch gains even as KASA announced the mission's success.

What do these terms mean?

Sell on the news: A trading approach in which investors buy in anticipation of news and sell when it actually materializes, causing the stock to drop despite the positive news.

Brokerage firm: A company that executes buy and sell orders for its clients and provides stock research and recommendations, such as Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan.

Institutional investor: An entity that invests massive sums of capital, such as investment funds, banks, and insurance companies, whose trading volumes significantly move prices.

Catalyst expiration: The moment when an event anticipated by the market concludes, after which demand for the stock decreases due to the absence of a new reason to buy.
