Japan Spends Around $34 Billion to Intervene in Currency Market and Support Yen

Japan spent an estimated $34 billion in direct foreign exchange interventions aimed at preventing the Japanese yen from falling below the sensitive psychological threshold of 160 yen against the US dollar.

This massive intervention represents a government attempt to stem the wave of weakness affecting the yen amid a wide gap between high US interest rates and relatively low Japanese rates, as investors prefer holding dollars to achieve higher yields.

Japan relies on its massive foreign exchange reserves, among the highest in the world, to fund these interventions. However, analysts point out that intervention alone does not solve the fundamental issue of the interest rate differential between the two economies.

Economists believe that the radical solution to the yen's weakness lies in the Bank of Japan raising interest rates at a faster pace to narrow the yield gap with the dollar, rather than spending monetary reserves on temporary interventions whose effects could be neutralized by market pressures within days or weeks.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Currency Market Intervention: The buying or selling of the national currency by the central bank or the public treasury to influence its exchange rate. It is typically used to stop excessive upward or downward movement.

Interest Rate Differential: The difference between interest rates in two countries. The larger the differential in favor of the US dollar, the higher the demand for it and the weaker the yen becomes, because investors prefer the currency with higher returns.

Foreign Exchange Reserves: A nation's stockpile of foreign currencies and gold held to intervene in markets or face crises. Japan holds the world's second-largest reserves after China.
