US Space Development Agency Awards $3.5 Billion to Build 72 Missile-Tracking Satellites
The US Space Development Agency has awarded contracts totaling $3.5 billion to multiple contractors to build 72 Tranche 3 satellites dedicated to missile tracking.

The US Space Development Agency announced the distribution of contracts worth a total of $3.5 billion to private sector contractors, covering the design and manufacturing of 72 satellites as part of what is known as Tranche 3 of the space-based missile defense network program.
These satellites form the tracking layer that will detect intercontinental ballistic missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles—threats that have become a top priority in US defense planning amid the rapid evolution of Russian and Chinese missile arsenals.
The Space Development Agency relies on a strategy of successive "tranches" to build its space architecture, where each tranche adds new, more advanced satellites on top of a previous network, enabling it to continuously update its system without needing a complete overhaul.
The distribution of these contracts among multiple contractors deepens the Pentagon's strategy of building a diverse space industrial base, reducing reliance on a single supplier and stimulating competition, which in turn drives faster technical development and lower costs.
