Gulf Merchants and Ministers Discuss Supply Chain Continuity in Manama

The 15th consultative meeting of the Ministers of Commerce and Industry of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries with the heads of Gulf federations and chambers of commerce and industry was held in the Bahraini capital, Manama, as reported by the Qatari website "Al-Arab".

Among the speakers was the Chairman of the Federation of GCC Chambers, Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani. The discussion focused on cooperation between the public and private sectors in light of the regional crisis, as well as on supply chain continuity and the flexibility of trade and logistics services.

The meeting did not announce any binding decisions or recommendations, according to reports. This indicates that the meeting was consultative in nature, aimed at coordinating positions and exchanging views between the two sectors before taking any executive steps.

The meeting comes at a time when trade and navigation in the region are affected by tensions, increasing the importance of coordinating alternative routes, reserve stocks, and facilitating the movement of goods among the Gulf states. Any subsequent results of this coordination are expected to reflect on shipping costs and delivery times for importers and exporters in the region. Gulf supply chain coordination represents a growing priority because most of the region's trade passes through shared ports and sea lanes.

What do these terms mean?

Chambers of Commerce: Entities that represent the interests of merchants and companies in a country and mediate between them and government bodies.

Consultative Meeting: A coordination meeting that does not usually issue binding decisions, but is rather used to exchange views and prepare for subsequent steps.
