High Interest Rates in Egypt Put Pressure on Stock Valuations

Financial analysts believe that the high levels of interest rates in Egypt, which hover around 19-20%, represent a real challenge to the attractiveness of investing in the Egyptian Exchange compared to high-yield bank deposits.

These analysts explain that the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios for Egyptian stocks appear less attractive when compared to the returns on guaranteed savings instruments, thereby weakening interest in stocks among conservative investors.

On the other hand, a group of optimists sees these pressures as temporary, believing that declining inflation and expectations of future interest rate cuts will restore momentum to the stock market, especially if companies continue to deliver strong earnings growth.

The outcome depends on the trajectory of inflation; as inflation subsides, it opens the door for the central bank to cut interest rates, which in turn will redraw the map of investment opportunities in the Egyptian market.

What do these terms mean?

Price-to-Earnings Ratio (P/E): A metric comparing a stock's market price to the company's earnings per share, used to evaluate whether a stock is overvalued or undervalued relative to its peers.

Yield on Deposits: The annual interest rate a depositor receives for placing funds in a bank; comparing it to stock returns determines investor direction.

Fixed Income Instruments: Investment tools such as deposits and bonds that offer a predetermined return and lower risk than stocks, competing with the stock market to attract savings when interest rates rise.
