Western Union, the US money transfer giant, has launched its own stablecoin known as WUUSD on the Solana blockchain network, in a move reported to be the first of its kind for a traditional remittance company of this size in the cryptocurrency world.

The new coin targets instant online individual remittances, allowing platform users to send and receive money at a lower cost compared to traditional channels, leveraging the speed of the Solana network, which processes thousands of transactions per second at extremely low costs.

Western Union clarified that WUUSD is backed 1:1 by the US dollar and is subject to full US regulatory oversight, setting it apart from many stablecoins operating in legally grey areas. It added that the initial launch will cover transfer corridors between the United States and several countries in Latin America and South Asia.

This step comes amidst accelerating blockchain adoption by traditional financial companies. Analysts view Western Union's entry with an official stablecoin as an explicit acknowledgment that the future of money transfers will be primarily digital, noting that the company now competes directly with platforms like Stellar and Ripple in this sector.
