China's Economy Grows 4.5% Driven by AI Boom and Exports

China's economy grew by 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, exceeding economists' expectations and rising from 4.3% in the second quarter, according to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics. Growth reached 4.6% in the first nine months of the year.

Industrial production jumped 5.5% in September, compared to 5.2% in August, supported by increased exports of electronics, AI-related equipment, and automobiles. Manufacturing output rose 6%, while high-tech manufacturing grew at a faster pace than traditional sectors.

In contrast, retail sales rose by only 1.1% in September, pointing to weak domestic consumption. Fixed-asset investment declined 7.2% over the first nine months, and real estate investment fell 20.6%, with infrastructure spending remaining sluggish.

Duncan Wrigley, Chief China Economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said that the rise in industrial output in September was partly due to coal mines resuming operations following safety inspections, and that manufacturing output growth remained strong at 6% year-on-year, buoyed by stronger export demand for electronics, AI-related equipment, and automobiles. Analysts at ABN AMRO stated that the growth acceleration in the third quarter mainly reflects export strength driven by the global boom in AI and technology, which outweighed the impact of weak domestic demand and the conflict with Iran. According to National Bureau of Statistics data, this puts the economy on track to achieve the government's growth target of between 4.5% and 5% without an additional stimulus package.
