Storms Cut Off Rail Freight Access to Port of Marseille-Fos

Severe storms cut off rail freight access to the Port of Marseille-Fos in southern France while SNCF Réseau worked to repair damaged infrastructure, according to Anadolu Agency.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said four people died following severe storms that struck southeastern France and Corsica, without specifying how long the freight disruption would last.

Regional train services faced widespread disruption, while Storm Austin is expected to hit northwestern France overnight until October 23.

The Port of Marseille-Fos is France's largest port and one of the most important shipping hubs in the Mediterranean, meaning the rail link disruption could impact the movement of goods between the port and Europe.

What do these terms mean?

Rail freight: Transporting goods in dedicated trains or containers on railway tracks, typically used for long distances.

SNCF Réseau: The French company responsible for managing and maintaining the railway network.

Storm: A weather disturbance accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, which can cause widespread infrastructure damage.
