FTSE Russell Removes Egypt from Watchlist and Retains Emerging Markets Status

FTSE Russell has removed Egypt and the Egyptian capital market from its watchlist after meeting the required international criteria, while retaining its emerging market classification, according to Business Today Egypt.

The market's removal from the watchlist means it is no longer subject to exceptional monitoring by the index provider, freeing it from restrictions that might have been imposed had it failed to meet the conditions, and sending a positive signal to global investors regarding the trading environment in the Egyptian market.

Omar Radwan, Chairman of the Egyptian Exchange, said the decision represents a vote of confidence in the market's resilience and its ability to adhere to international standards, reflecting an improved standing for the exchange among foreign investors.

This development is particularly relevant to global index funds and foreign investors, as maintaining the market's classification within emerging markets and tracking it according to international standards facilitates institutional tracking and enhances the chances of capital inflows at a time when Egypt is seeking to attract new capital.

What do these terms mean?

Egyptian Exchange: The official stock market in Egypt where listed companies' shares are traded, which is directly affected by any change in the market's classification.
