A cyberattack that took place at night raised temperatures in the refrigeration and freezing units of supermarkets in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden, according to CBC News, citing Reuters.

Among those affected were stores belonging to the Ahold Delhaize, Colruyt, ICA and Coop groups and one IKEA store, which prompted some stores to discard food, according to the same source.

The incident follows a similar attack in France on October 12, while no party has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The European Union's Commissioner for Food and Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, said the incidents represent "a deliberate attempt to disrupt our food supply chain".

What do these terms mean?

Cyberattack: a deliberate breach or disruption of computer systems or devices connected to a network.

Cold chain: the chain of transport and storage of perishable food within constant low temperatures to preserve its safety.

Food supply chain: the stages food passes through from production to storage, distribution and arrival at stores.
