ECB Prepares to Raise Interest Rates by 25 Basis Points to 2.5% as Energy Price Surge Reignites Inflation

European Rate Hike: Imminent Decision in the Face of Renewed Inflation

The European Central Bank is preparing to raise its key interest rates by 25 basis points to 2.5%, a move aimed at curbing a renewed wave of inflation reignited by high energy prices in the eurozone.

Inflation in the eurozone is rebounding as oil and gas prices recover due to escalating geopolitical tensions, putting renewed pressure on the ECB to act even as economic growth slows down.

While major financial institutions maintain their expectations that the bank will raise rates during the upcoming meeting, preliminary data indicates that core inflation remains elevated above the bank's 2% target, narrowing the margin of retreat for policymakers.

The ECB had previously pursued an aggressive monetary tightening cycle through consecutive rate hikes to contain inflation, which peaked following the energy shock resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war; however, the new energy surge forces it to confront a second wave before prices stabilize.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Basis point: A unit of measure equal to 0.01%, used to describe small changes in interest rates — 25 basis points means an increase of 0.25%.

Core inflation: A price index that excludes highly volatile food and energy items, considered more indicative of underlying structural inflationary pressures.

Tight monetary policy: Raising interest rates to tame inflation by restricting credit and cooling demand in the economy.
