Egypt and Saudi Arabia Prepare to Activate 3-Gigawatt Electrical Interconnection

Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are preparing to operate the 3-gigawatt electrical interconnection project between the two countries, a massive infrastructure project that represents a pivotal step toward achieving energy integration among Arab nations and boosting both parties' capacity to exchange electrical power.

This interconnection is considered one of the largest power grid connection projects in the region, extending across the Red Sea route to provide a channel for exporting electricity from Egypt to Gulf markets, particularly Saudi Arabia, reflecting the maturity of the region's energy infrastructure.

On the Egyptian side, the interconnection provides a strategic opportunity to generate revenue from exporting electricity generated from renewable sources, amid Egypt's ambition to build massive solar and wind power capacities and export the surplus to neighboring countries. On the Saudi side, the connection represents an additional tributary to diversify electrical energy sources and enhance supply security.

This project aligns with the broader regional trend toward building interconnected energy networks among regional countries, thereby enhancing economic coordination and reducing the impact of seasonal disruptions in electricity demand.

What do these terms mean?

Electrical Interconnection: Infrastructure consisting of cables and transmission lines that connect the power grids between two or more countries, enabling cross-border energy exchange, buying, and selling.

Gigawatt: A unit of measurement for electrical power capacity equal to one billion watts, used to describe the capacity of large power plants and transmission networks.

Energy Security: A concept that means ensuring the continuous availability of electrical energy in sufficient quantities and at reasonable prices, which is a strategic goal for most countries in the region.
