China Expands Cross-Border Yuan Services in Gulf Markets

China has expanded cross-border Yuan services in Middle Eastern markets, in a step reflecting Beijing's accelerating efforts toward internationalizing its currency and reducing international trade's reliance on the US dollar, under agreements concluded with several Gulf central banks.

This expansion falls within a broader framework adopted by China to promote the use of the Yuan in trade settlements, including the CIPS network for interbank payments in Chinese currency, which is now competing with the SWIFT system as an alternative for international transfers.

Gulf interest in the Yuan is growing in light of rapidly expanding trade with China, as Beijing has become the primary trading partner for several countries in the region, making the pricing of a portion of oil deals in Yuan a practical option under discussion by some Gulf nations.

Analysts believe that a full shift toward the Yuan remains far off given the dollar's dominance over international reserves and energy markets, but they point out that China's cumulative steps are accelerating the formation of a multipolar financial system that gradually erodes US supremacy.

What do these terms mean?

Cross-border RMB: This is the use of the Chinese currency (Yuan or Renminbi) to settle trade payments between two countries outside China, instead of using the dollar as an intermediary. This approach reduces costs and relieves countries from the risks of dollar fluctuations.

CIPS System: The international payment system in Chinese currency, launched by China in 2015 as a partial alternative to SWIFT. It allows banks to transfer funds directly in Yuan without going through the US financial system.

Dollarization of Trade: The phenomenon of US dollar dominance over most international trade settlements, even in deals with no connection to the US. This dominance grants the United States immense economic and political influence over the global economy.
