Thailand Amends Visa System to Grant 60 Countries 30-Day Stay and Restricts Land Border Entry

Thailand and Visa System Reform: A Step to Regulate Tourism and Rationalize Long Stays

Thailand has launched a new visa policy framework that restructures the existing visa exemption system for international visitors, allowing citizens of 60 countries to stay for 30 days without a prior visa, replacing the previous 60-day duration applicable under the unified system.

The amendments also include a restriction on the number of entries through land border checkpoints, a move primarily targeting long-term residents who repeatedly renewed their stay through so-called "border runs" without obtaining official long-term visas.

Through this reform, Thailand aims to attract higher-value tourism with shorter, higher-spending stays, while regulating the phenomenon of "informal digital nomads" who have remained in the country for extended periods without clear legal status.

While critics argue that reducing the exemption period may curb spending by long-term visitors, the Thai government maintains that the move will boost tourism revenue by encouraging visitors wishing to stay longer to obtain dedicated visas that generate higher returns for the treasury.

What do these terms mean?

Visa-Free Exemption: A policy allowing citizens of specific countries to enter without needing a prior visa, usually for a limited duration.

Border Runs: A practice adopted by some residents of exiting the country via the nearest land border and returning immediately to renew their legal stay period without applying for a new visa.
