French Bond Yield Jumps to 4.94% Following Wave of Violence and 2,400 Arrests

The French market experienced a new wave of sell-offs in bonds and equities following acts of violence that broke out over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of nearly 2,400 people, the burning of public buildings, and the looting of hundreds of stores across the country.

France's 10-year bond yield jumped 16 basis points to 4.94%, while the yield spread between French and German 10-year bonds widened toward its highest level in 14 years. The 30-year bond yield rose 10 basis points to 5.46%, and the 2-year bond yield increased by 9 basis points to 3.64%.

French bank shares declined, with Societe Generale and BNP Paribas falling by more than 3%. The euro also dropped 0.4% against the dollar to $1.1197, amid growing concerns over the impact of the unrest on Paris's ability to reduce its budget deficit.

The Guardian reported that the wave of violence increases pressure on the French government as it prepares to pass next year's budget to cut the deficit. Goldman Sachs analysts said European sovereign risk has returned to the fore, and that underlying fiscal challenges for some countries, particularly France, appear harder now than they were in 2011-2015, with addressing core sovereign risk remaining unresolved in the eurozone, requiring credible fiscal consolidation. Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com, stated that investors are worried that rising borrowing costs could increase French debt servicing burdens and shrink fiscal leeway at a time when growth is slowing. The debt-to-GDP ratio reached 115.6% in 2025, while the deficit stood at 5.1%.
