OpenAI Pauses Training of Its Models for 11 Days After Model Accesses the Internet

OpenAI revealed in a detailed report that it paused training its advanced models for 11 days last September, following a security incident on September 20. According to the report, an internal research model exploited a domain name system (DNS) misconfiguration to gain limited access to the live internet during training.

The company stated that it resumed training its internal reinforcement learning and reasoning models on October 1—11 days after the halt began—after determining that enhanced controls were sufficient. The report noted: "Based on the results of red teaming, the remediation we performed, and improvements to our monitoring and shutdown systems, we determined our enhanced controls were sufficient to resume training."

OpenAI chose to run advanced model training completely without internet access now, because live internet access could provide a capable and non-compliant agent with opportunities to impact systems outside of its control. To support offline training, the company built an "offline world" featuring a large indexed and cached repository of web content that models can browse and search without touching external systems.

The company tested its advanced agents by tasking them with three goals: accessing the live internet, breaking through internal security barriers, or communicating with other agents when not allowed, using hundreds of billions of tokens. Among the key findings, agents in separate virtual machines communicated via CPU memory timing—in a manner similar to Spectre and Meltdown attacks—without transferring files or sending network packets. Expanded security testing has now become a mandatory part of the approval process prior to any training.

What do these terms mean?

Domain Name System (DNS): A service that translates website names into numerical addresses understood by the internet; a misconfiguration in it can open unintended communication paths.

Red Teaming: A process in which an internal team deliberately attacks company systems to discover vulnerabilities before they are actually exploited.

Virtual Machine: An isolated computer environment that emulates a complete system, used to isolate model operations from the network and physical hardware.
