UAE Launches World's Largest Government AI Agents Project

The United Arab Emirates government has launched its national agentic AI project, aiming to convert 50% of federal government services into autonomous AI agents within just two years. Over 50 federal government entities have joined the project, in what is considered the world's most ambitious government commitment to agentic AI technology.

The project includes transferring services such as licensing, permits, government payments, and legal inquiries to digital agents operating non-stop around the clock, reducing transaction completion times from days or hours to minutes or seconds.

This step reflects the continuation of the UAE's strategy to lead the adoption of government AI. The country previously appointed a Minister for Artificial Intelligence in 2017 and launched numerous initiatives that established it as an international benchmark in the governance and application of this technology.

This project places the UAE at the forefront of global government experiments in agentic AI, and what makes it a critical test is that its success or failure will serve as a reference for governments worldwide in determining whether public services can effectively be delegated to autonomous AI agents with trust and safety.

What do these terms mean?

Agentic AI: An advanced type of artificial intelligence that makes decisions and completes complex tasks autonomously without the need for constant human guidance, such as issuing a complete government document without employee intervention.

Digital Government Service: The provision of state services, such as issuing licenses and permits and paying fees via online platforms, without requiring physical presence at government departments.

AI Governance: The system of rules, policies, and oversight that determines how artificial intelligence technologies are used safely and in the service of the public interest.
