NEOM Stadium Halt Part of Saudi Arabia's Megaproject Reprioritisation

Construction of the NEOM stadium designated to host 2034 World Cup matches has been postponed indefinitely, according to a Reuters report cited by the sports facility platform StadiumDB and based on two informed sources, making the stadium the latest large project subject to a halt in Saudi Arabia.

The venue was designed to accommodate approximately 46,000 spectators above ground level, and consultancy project "MEED Projects" estimated its construction cost at around $2.5 billion, with no final completion date set.

This suspension is part of a broader shift by the Public Investment Fund to reprioritise its giga-projects: Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan confirmed last April that 'The Line' was no longer a priority and did not have to be completed within the originally planned timeframe, while denying that any project had been formally cancelled. Reuters had previously reported the suspension of work on the 'Mukaab' cube-shaped skyscraper planned as part of the New Murabba development in Riyadh, as the fund gradually moves towards ventures that can deliver financial benefits sooner.

These developments do not mean Saudi Arabia is abandoning its plans to host the tournament, as it prepares for the World Cup by equipping 15 stadiums across five cities. MEED Projects estimates the combined value of stadium projects and related infrastructure at around $22.7 billion, while authorities insist preparations are progressing without directly answering questions about the future of the NEOM stadium.

What do these terms mean?

2034 World Cup: The major football tournament hosted by Saudi Arabia, requiring the construction of stadiums and extensive infrastructure before its kickoff.

Public Investment Fund: The Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which owns and oversees giga-projects such as NEOM under Vision 2030.

Giga-projects: Multi-billion dollar megaprojects aiming to transform entire economies, including NEOM, The Line, and Qiddiya.
