Gold Jumps from $4,000 to $4,633 Then Pulls Back to the Mid-$4,400s

August 2026 witnessed an extraordinary journey for gold prices, as the yellow metal surged from levels hovering around $4,000 per ounce to cross the $4,600 barrier, recording an all-time high of $4,633.90 on the twenty-first of the month, before a wave of profit-taking kicked in and pushed prices back toward the mid-$4,400 range.

This wide swing reflects the nature of a market that combines long-term structural buyers (central banks and sovereign wealth funds) with short-term traders taking advantage of every rally to lock in quick profits, creating sharp short-term volatility within a broader long-term upward trend.

Analysts noted that the retreat from the historic high was orderly and limited, not exceeding around 4% from its peak at its worst stages, indicating that sellers do not dominate the market and that real demand continues to support prices on every dip.

Technical analysts believe that the $4,400-$4,450 area has become a solid support base; if gold succeeds in stabilizing above it, the path toward attempting to break higher levels remains open in the fourth quarter of the year, according to technical analysis.

What do these terms mean?

Support and Resistance Levels: Price zones where a price decline stops (support) or where a price rally hits a ceiling (resistance). Breaking a support level implies a continued decline, while closing above a resistance level signals a move toward higher targets.

Profit-Taking: The act of selling an asset after its price has risen to realize gains. Waves of profit-taking cause temporary pullbacks even in the strongest assets, usually presenting new opportunities for buyers who missed the initial surge.

Technical Analysis: A method of evaluating markets based on studying price charts and historical trading patterns to predict future movements, rather than analyzing fundamental factors like economics and politics.
