China Tightens Export Restrictions on Drones and Components Starting November 18

China announced new export controls on drones, airships, and related components and technologies under Announcement No. 49 of 2026, set to take effect on November 18, 2026, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The announcement was issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Customs, and the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission. It covers specific autopilot systems, drones, and airships based on flight duration and resistance to wind gusts, in addition to engines and wireless equipment.

The restrictions also include long-range drones or those capable of carrying spraying equipment, brushless motors, electronic speed controllers, and propellers, along with related software and technologies.

The decision comes at a time when several countries are expanding the use of drones for commercial and security purposes, making supply chains for sensitive components a focus of attention for manufacturers and importers.

What do these terms mean?

Drone: An aircraft or aerial vehicle operated remotely or functioning autonomously without an onboard pilot.

Autopilot: An electronic system that controls an aircraft's flight path, speed, and altitude instead of continuous manual control.

Electronic Speed Controller: A component that regulates the rotational speed of an electric motor in a drone, affecting its stability and maneuverability.
