Shanghai Container Freight Rebounds After Two Weeks, Europe Leads Gains

The Shanghai Container Freight Index rose by 0.05% to 3,664.11 points, breaking a two-consecutive-week decline, according to the latest data released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange on September 25, reported by the China Shipping Information Agency (CCI).

European routes led container freight rate gains, as the cost of transporting a standard container from the Far East to Europe rose by $75 to reach $2,274, while freight to the Mediterranean climbed by $6 (0.20%) to $3,002.

On Transpacific routes, freight from the Far East to the US West Coast rose by $6 (0.08%) to $7,584 per container, while freight to the East Coast fell by $4 (0.04%) to ten thousand five hundred twenty-four dollars.

These weekly figures reflect price movements of cargo transported in sea containers, not stock market index performance. They are monitored by shipping companies and importers in the region due to their direct impact on the cost of importing and exporting goods between global ports, particularly amid navigation disruptions and changing trade routes in recent months.

What do these terms mean?

Shanghai Container Freight Index: A weekly index published by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange measuring container freight rate movements on major trade routes.

Standard Container: A unit of measurement for ocean freight volume, referring to a 20-foot container, while another unit measures larger containers.

Spot Freight Rates: Published rates for booking a shipment on an upcoming voyage, reflecting current supply and demand on a specific route, unlike long-term contracts.
