Publishers Turn Generative Engine Optimization From Experiment into a Business

Digital publishers are turning 'Generative Engine Optimization' services from a mere experiment into a standalone line of business, selling advertisers visibility inside AI tool answers alongside traditional sponsored content, as reported by Digiday.

Publishers point out that Future has more than 30 clients in this field in addition to renewals, and that Time magazine places advertiser messages inside Markdown files read by automated agents, while half a dozen top digital publishers sell similar products to add to their revenue sources.

This shift comes amid a 40.2% year-over-year drop in Google search referrals to publishers between July 2025 and July 2026, compared to a tiny fraction not exceeding 0.01% of traffic coming from AI tools so far.

The issue of measurement remains unresolved, as the IAB is scheduled to publish a measurement framework in November, a prerequisite for this activity to become priceable and negotiable with advertisers on a clear basis that protects publishers' rights.

What do these terms mean?

**Generative Engine Optimization:** Structuring content to appear inside AI tool responses, not just traditional search results. **Markdown File:** A simple text format that automated agents can easily read and interpret messages directed at them. **Search Referrals:** Traffic arriving at a website when a reader clicks a link in search engine results, a key metric for publishers' advertising revenue.
