Typhoon Champi Halts Bunkering Operations in Zhoushan

All ship bunkering operations at the Chinese port of Zhoushan have been suspended due to bad weather accompanying Typhoon Champi, with no announced date for resuming operations, according to the Engine website.

Suppliers stated that waiting times reached approximately 13 days for Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and about 11 days for High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO).

The typhoon recorded sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour, down from 250 kilometers per hour, and pilotage operations were suspended at the mouth of the Yangtze River, with potential closures in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

Chantal Roberts from Drewry warned that a one-day port closure could take about five weeks to clear the backlog during a quiet period, or about two months in peak season, threatening delays across regional supply chains.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Low-Sulfur Marine Fuel: A type of marine fuel where the sulfur content does not exceed the limits imposed by the International Maritime Organization to reduce pollution.

Maritime Pilotage: A service in which a specialized pilot guides the ship upon entering or exiting the port to ensure navigation safety.

Peak Season: A period during which shipping demand intensifies, leading to increased port traffic and delays in cargo unloading.
