Hormuz Sees 12 Ship Attacks in a Week, Highest Since Start of War

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) recorded 12 ships subjected to attacks in the Strait of Hormuz region between October 5 and 11, the highest weekly number since the start of the war.

This number represents an increase from 10 attacks the previous week, as reported by FreightWaves, with six ships targeted on Sunday alone.

The Singapore-flagged feeder ship "GFS Pride" caught fire and sank off the coast of Oman carrying containers, with all 21 crew members safely evacuated. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore disputed Iran's claim that a mine, rather than a projectile, caused the vessel to sink.

In a sign of declining traffic, the platform Kpler recorded 131 transits through the strait in the week ending October 14, down from 176 transits the previous week.

What do these terms mean?

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO): A unit affiliated with the Royal Navy that monitors navigation security and notifies ships of attack risks in the Gulf and Arabian Sea region.

Feeder Ship (Feeder): A small container ship that transfers containers between the main port and nearby harbors.

Kpler: A data platform that tracks ship and cargo movements and measures the number of transits through maritime straits.
