US PCE Inflation Index Surpasses 3.7% Amid Continued Price Pressures
The main US PCE inflation index rose to 3.7%, with more than half of its components recording inflation rates above 3%, signalling persistent inflationary pressures.

The main Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index in the United States rose to 3.7%, exceeding expectations, with more than half of its components recording inflation rates above 3%, deepening concerns about sticky price pressures in the US economy.
The PCE index is the Federal Reserve's preferred tool for measuring inflation, as it reflects shifts in consumer behavior more accurately than the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The latest data limits the central bank's options and pushes it toward further tightening.
Economists point out that persistent high levels of service inflation are the primary driver keeping the PCE index stuck above the 2% target, noting that a strong labor market maintains upward pressure on wages and consequently on prices.
Analysts believe that the PCE index remaining above 3.5% gives the Fed sufficient justification to raise interest rates in September, while another group warns that over-tightening could push the economy into an unintended recession, especially if the labor market slows faster than expected.
What do these terms mean?
PCE Index: Short for "Personal Consumption Expenditures", it measures changes in the prices of goods and services purchased by consumers. It is preferred by the Federal Reserve because it accounts for changes in purchasing behavior.
2% Inflation Target: The rate targeted by the Federal Reserve to maintain price stability. Inflation rising above it prompts rate hikes to cool the economy.
Services Inflation: Rising prices for services such as rent, healthcare, and education. It is difficult to reduce because it is tied to wages and is more resistant to monetary policy than goods inflation.
