IEA Estimates Oil Supply Deficit at 1.8 Million Barrels per Day in Q3

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that global oil markets are experiencing a supply deficit of around 1.8 million barrels per day during the third quarter of 2026, an indicator reflecting tight oil supply in the face of high demand.

These estimates come in the context of ongoing voluntary production cuts by the OPEC+ alliance, in addition to a decline in global commercial inventories that have not been adequately compensated by supply sources outside the alliance.

The agency noted that global oil demand turned out stronger than previously expected, particularly in Asia and emerging economies, intensifying the gap between supply and demand and putting pressure on strategic reserve stocks.

The agency expects this deficit to support oil price levels in the coming months, amid limited expectations of supply increases from outside OPEC+, making the alliance's upcoming decisions highly impactful on global price trends.

What do these terms mean?

International Energy Agency (IEA): An international organization established in 1974 comprising major industrial nations, responsible for monitoring global energy markets and issuing periodic reports on supply, demand, and inventories.

Supply Deficit: The negative difference between the quantities of oil supplied to the market and the quantities demanded, typically leading to price increases when sustained for extended periods.

Third Quarter: The period extending from July through September of each year, which is one of the peak demand periods for energy due to the summer travel season and increased demand for jet fuel and gasoline.
