Saudi Arabia and Syria Sign Two MoUs to Develop Roads and Railways

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Syria signed two memorandums of understanding in the fields of land transport and railways during a visit by a high-level Saudi delegation to Damascus, in a step considered the first of its kind following years of diplomatic rupture between the two countries.

The first agreement includes rehabilitating the Syrian land network and facilitating the transit of commercial trucks across the shared borders, while the second agreement focuses on reopening railway lines that ceased operation during the years of conflict. Officials explained that implementation will proceed in phases in coordination between both sides.

This signing comes within the context of the normalization path led by Saudi Arabia with the Syrian government, as Riyadh seeks to restore the historical land trade corridors that connected the Arabian Gulf to the Levant and Europe through Syrian territory. Estimates indicate that reactivating these corridors could save freight transport more than 30 percent in shipping costs compared to alternative routes.

These agreements represent a real test for Syria's reconstruction path and the extent to which new institutions can fulfill international obligations. If implemented, they will contribute to connecting the region with a more efficient logistical network, which will positively reflect on import and export costs for Gulf states and reinforce Syria's position as a strategic transit corridor.
