Uber Deploys ChatGPT Work to 30,000 Employees
Uber expanded its partnership with OpenAI to include all of its approximately 30,000 employees, following an initial trial involving 1,000 employees.
Uber and OpenAI announced the expansion of their partnership, as the transport giant stated that all of its approximately 30,000 employees worldwide will use the "ChatGPT Work" tool designed for enterprises, following an initial trial involving 1,000 employees earlier in the year.
The trial included employees from various departments, including finance, operations, and product, with nearly 80% of early users being non-engineers, according to Sumanth Sukumar, Vice President of Engineering at Uber. He said they used the tool to analyze complex operational data to identify trends and make recommendations, localize training materials for different markets and languages, and build personalized interactive dashboards to manage daily work.
Sukumar stated that Uber follows an approach based on making powerful AI tools available across the company while giving teams room to experiment. He added that the company paired 30 AI engineers with different teams and gave them two weeks to automate key parts of their work—an experiment that demonstrated the opportunities that arise when technical expertise is combined with a deep understanding of job roles. Uber did not disclose the amount spent on the expansion, but said it will track employee usage, the workflows they develop, and the outcomes to measure effectiveness.
The move comes at a time when OpenAI and Anthropic are competing for the enterprise AI tools market. OpenAI, initially known as a consumer-facing brand, has rapidly expanded its enterprise business and says it worked closely with Uber to integrate the tool into the company's work environment.
