Global Travel Demand Fell 0.8% in August, Middle East Carriers Down 14.6%

Global air travel demand fell 0.8% year-on-year in August 2026, while offered capacity rose 0.3%, according to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported by the "TTR Weekly" website.

The passenger load factor dropped to 85.1%, a decline of 0.9 percentage points, with the contraction being most pronounced among Middle East carriers, whose demand fell 14.6% year-on-year.

IATA attributes the weakness to travelers whose purchasing power declined due to high energy prices, while forward schedules for October show a 2% growth in offered seats.

This contrast between contracting demand and increasing supply reflects pressure on carrier profits, as expanding seat capacity alongside weak demand forces price cuts to maintain load factors.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Air Travel Demand (RPK): The number of passengers multiplied by the distances they travel, used as a comprehensive measure of air transport activity worldwide.

Load Factor: The ratio of sold seats to available seats on aircraft; the higher it is, the more efficient the airline is in utilizing its fleet.

Percentage Point: A unit equal to one hundredth, used to compare changes in percentages; a drop in the factor from 86% to 85.1% means a decrease of 0.9 percentage points.
