Bitcoin Surpasses $100,000 Barrier for the First Time in History

The price of the digital currency Bitcoin surpassed the $100,000 threshold for the first time in its history, setting an unprecedented record level amid an ongoing rally that spanned several weeks.

Market analysts attribute this jump to the influx of massive institutional investments through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), opening the door for major investors to enter the cryptocurrency market in an organized manner.

This rise was also driven by investor expectations that the new U.S. administration will adopt more friendly policies toward cryptocurrencies, which prompted several major companies to increase their Bitcoin reserves.

Gulf countries maintain a cautious regulatory stance on digital currencies, although the UAE launched a regulatory framework through the VARA authority in Dubai, turning the region into a destination for cryptocurrency companies seeking a clear regulatory environment. Market data tracks growing Arab interest in digital currencies, with the region ranking among the highest in the world for digital asset adoption rates relative to population size.

What do these terms mean?

Bitcoin: The first and most famous cryptocurrency in the world, invented by a person under the pseudonym "Satoshi Nakamoto" in 2009. It is not issued by a government or a central bank, and its total supply is capped at a maximum of 21 million units, making it inherently scarce.

Exchange-Traded Funds (ETF): Investment tools that allow purchasing a share in a basket of assets (such as Bitcoin) via traditional stock exchanges without holding the underlying asset directly. Institutional entry through this path means massive, organized capital flows into the market.

Halving: An event occurring every four years in which the rate of new Bitcoin issuance is cut in half. Investors believe it reduces supply and drives the price upward, as seen in previous bull runs in 2017 and 2021.
