US Military Advises Ships to Avoid Unnecessary Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, through the Joint Maritime Information Center, issued an advisory on Wednesday advising vessels that do not need to navigate between the ports of the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz to stay away from the area to avoid unnecessary delays to their voyages.

The command stated that ships transiting the area should plan for extra transit time due to increased traffic density and military blockade enforcement operations.

The advisory explained that neutral vessels carrying neutral cargo or sailing empty between neutral ports may be subject to questioning and inspection to verify their intentions regarding the blockade.

It was not clear what prompted the new advisory. U.S. forces had issued a similar notice in mid-July at the start of the blockade on Iranian shipping, stating at the time that the blockade would not hinder neutral passage through Hormuz, but vessels should expect questioning about their intentions.

What do these terms mean?

Strait of Hormuz: A narrow waterway connecting the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, traversed by oil tankers and commercial ships.

Naval Blockade: A military measure restricting ship movement to a specific area or port, allowing for ship inspections to ensure compliance.

Neutral Vessel: A ship that does not belong to a party in the conflict and carries goods that do not serve any of the warring parties.
