Calls Escalate to Regulate Social Media's Impact on Adolescent Mental Health

A report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that depression rates among American teenage girls doubled between 2011 and 2021, the exact same period that witnessed the spread of smartphones and social media platforms, as documented by researcher Jonathan Haidt in his book "The Anxious Generation".

In 2024, Australia passed a law banning children under 16 from using social media platforms, an international precedent the government resorted to following reports of suicides linked to cyberbullying, while several European and Arab countries are considering similar legislation.

Companies like Meta and TikTok responded by enhancing parental control tools and "downtime" features; however, researchers believe that algorithms designed to keep users engaged for the longest session inherently conflict with protecting adolescents' mental health.

Psychologists believe that the current moment demands reframing the relationship between children and the digital space, warning that early digital addiction reshapes the developing brain and reduces the ability to tolerate boredom and waiting, and to build genuine social relationships.

What do these terms mean?

Recommendation Algorithm: A software system that analyzes user behavior and preferences to display content most likely to keep them engaged on the platform, facing accusations of amplifying emotionally charged content at the expense of mental health.

Cyberbullying: A form of abuse that occurs through digital space, such as sending offensive messages, posting embarrassing photos, or excluding someone from digital social groups; it is considered more impactful than traditional bullying due to its persistence and reach.

Digital Parental Controls: Software tools that allow parents to restrict their children's use of applications and websites, set screen time limits, and monitor the content they are exposed to on digital devices.
