Saudi Economy Contracts 1.2% in Q1 2026 as Oil Activity Drops 6.8%

The Saudi economy recorded a quarterly contraction of 1.2% during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the fourth quarter of 2025, while production in the oil sector fell by 6.8%, constituting the largest drag on growth.

The Saudi General Authority for Statistics reported that non-oil sectors maintained some momentum, particularly tourism, entertainment, and financial services, which experienced moderate growth driven by Vision 2030 initiatives.

This weak performance of the oil sector reflects a combination of interconnected factors, including OPEC+ decisions to cut production and the negative impact of regional tensions on exploration activity and energy investment.

This contraction represents a serious test for the Kingdom's economic diversification strategy. Analysts believe that accelerating economic openness and attracting investment in the technology and tourism sectors has become a necessity, not an option, to maintain acceptable growth rates.

What do these terms mean?

Quarterly Contraction: Comparing the economy's performance to the immediately preceding quarter rather than the same quarter of the previous year; it is more accurate in tracking sharp, short-term changes.

Vision 2030: The Saudi modernization strategy that aims to reduce reliance on oil and revitalize sectors such as tourism, entertainment, technology, and manufacturing by the year 2030.

Oil Sector: Accounts for about 40-45% of Saudi GDP; a significant decline in it immediately reflects on overall economic growth.
