Egypt and World Bank Launch National Charter to Raise Mining to 6% of GDP

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the World Bank Group announced a national charter to develop the mining sector in Egypt, aiming to raise the sector's contribution to 6% of gross domestic product (GDP).

The charter covers legislative and financial reforms, alongside developing geological data and digital systems, and establishing mineral processing centers.

The World Bank intends to expand its support for the mining sector fivefold to reach $19 billion over the fiscal years 2026 to 2030.

The charter links the modernization of the legislative framework, financing, and digital infrastructure at a time when Egypt seeks to make mining a larger pillar of its economy.

What Do These Terms Mean?

National Charter: A formal agreement bringing together government bodies and international institutions around specific goals and steps for a particular sector.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP): The value of all goods and services produced by a country during a year, used to measure the size of its economy.
