Egypt Completes Seventh Review of IMF Program and Receives $1.8 Billion Disbursement

Egypt has completed the seventh review of its economic reform program supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), following which it obtained a disbursement of $1.8 billion, in an international testament to Cairo's commitment to the agreed reform schedule.

The review included an evaluation of fiscal consolidation progress, banking sector reforms, exchange rate policies, and programs aimed at protecting the most vulnerable groups from the impacts of reform.

This disbursement opens the door for Egypt to access accompanying financing from other international institutions such as the World Bank, the European Union, and Gulf development funds, thereby boosting the country's financial standing.

This review represents a positive signal for both foreign and domestic investors. Analysts agree that continuing deep structural reforms remains the sole key to achieving sustainable growth and reducing reliance on external financing in the medium term.

What do these terms mean?

IMF Program Review: A periodic assessment conducted by IMF experts to verify a country's compliance with the reform program's conditions; passing it paves the way to receiving the allocated financial tranche disbursement.

Financial Tranche: A portion of an IMF loan disbursed after passing a periodic review; IMF programs are divided into multiple tranches to ensure the continued implementation of reforms.

Fiscal Consolidation: A set of measures aimed at reducing the budget deficit and rationalizing government spending; it is considered an essential condition in IMF programs and includes lifting certain subsidies and improving tax collection.
