ADNOC becomes first energy company to run OpenAI agents in oil fields
ADNOC signed a multi-year deal with OpenAI and G42 to bring Frontier agents into its operations, starting with oil and gas field development planning.

ADNOC, the Emirati energy company, signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI and G42 to bring agents from OpenAI's Frontier platform into its operations, making it the first energy company to use the platform, according to an announcement made during Sam Altman's visit to Abu Dhabi.
The first application targets planning for the development of oil and gas fields, a task ADNOC says could take hours instead of months, while human experts keep oversight of the decisions.
The agreement came among four agreements involving entities in Abu Dhabi, while the financial value of the deal was not announced.
The step reflects major energy companies' drive to integrate AI tools into planning and operations, while keeping the final decision with human experts instead of handing it to automated systems.
What do these terms mean?
AI agents: programs that work automatically to complete multi-step tasks instead of only answering a single question.
Frontier platform: a set of OpenAI tools that lets companies run AI agents inside their operating systems.
Field development planning: the process of setting the drilling and development stages of an oil or gas field and estimating costs and timelines.
Human oversight: keeping the final decision with human experts who review the system's outputs before they are carried out.
