Turkey orders Google to treat news publishers fairly in AI services

Turkey's Competition Authority ordered an interim measure concerning AI preview services and the AI mode in Google's search engine, after a preliminary review by the authority.

The measure requires Google to set non-discriminatory conditions between news publishers and that the terms of use reflect the economic value of journalistic content.

It also gives publishers the option to determine how their content appears in these AI services, independently of its appearance and indexing in other Google services.

The authority said the aim of the measure is to protect publishers' economic rights, not to restrict the AI services themselves.

What do these terms mean?

Interim measure: An urgent decision taken by the competition authority during an investigation to prevent possible harm before a final decision is issued.

Economic value of content: The return a publisher is entitled to for the use of its content in revenue-generating digital products.

Indexing: The process of scanning website pages and including them in search engine results so they appear to users.
