London Allows Mozambique to Personally Pursue Widow of Privinvest Founder

The High Court in London has rejected the appeal of Clara Martinez Thedy de Safa, widow of Privinvest founder Iskandar Safa, allowing Mozambique to personally pursue her in England over the roughly $2 billion tuna bonds case, according to a report published by The National on October 26, 2026.

Lord Justice Miles ruled that inheritance transfers automatically upon death under Lebanese law, and that Lebanese law does not recognize the concept of an estate in the English sense.

The ruling leaves the door open for Mozambique to pursue its claim against the widow personally, regarding the funds that devolved to her in this case.

The extent of the inheritance she received and the degree of her liability for it have not yet been determined, as these issues will be resolved at a later stage of the dispute.

What do these terms mean?

Appeal: A request to review a ruling issued by a lower court before a higher court.

Inheritance: The transfer of a deceased person's property and rights to their heirs in accordance with the law applicable to their estate.

Estate: The total assets, rights, and obligations left by the deceased, which are usually managed as an independent estate.
