Google Advises Platforms to Block Indexing of Shared Pages and Generated Outputs

On October 26, 2026, Google updated its guide for combating user-generated content spam, adding a section titled 'Only index search-focused content' asking platforms to distinguish between pages intended for public discovery and pages meant only for link holders.

Google provides three examples: shareable pages, generated outputs, and interactive tools, recommending that blocking indexing be the default setting for pages designated for sharing, collaboration, or one-off tasks. This can be implemented via the robots meta tag, the X-Robots-Tag header, or by blocking crawling in the robots.txt file, aimed at helping platforms detect spam earlier.

Google also added monitoring recommendations, including verifying the site or subdomain in Search Console to receive alerts for manual actions and security issues, and tracking page indexing and search performance reports to spot sudden spikes in indexed pages, impressions, or queries. It also asked platforms to count the number of public user-generated pages and set alerts for sharp increases in new pages or when a small number of accounts produce a large share of indexable links.

Google did not name any specific product, but SEO expert Lily Ray noted that the guidelines could cover shared AI chat pages and outputs from app-builder tools, while Marie Haynes questioned whether manual actions might extend to AI tools and app builders. Google did not comment on either interpretation, while any brand running a public quiz, calculator, or AI chat on its domain can check its Page Indexing report in Search Console today.

Indexing: The process by which search engines discover and store pages to show them in search results.

noindex tag: An instruction on a webpage requesting search engines not to display it in results.
