Israel Sets 200 MW Cap Per Data Center to Limit Power Grid Strain

Israel's Electricity Authority plans to publish a new regulatory framework allowing data centers to connect to the power grid, with a cap set at 200 MW per center, according to Calcalist Tech.

According to the authority's forecasts, data centers could consume up to 20% of Israel's total electricity consumption by 2030, at a time when the grid is operating near its capacity limits during peak hours.

In the summer of 2025, Israel recorded a peak electricity demand of 17,282 MW following four consecutive days of a heatwave, a 10% increase from the previous record set two years prior, while its total generation capacity stands at around 18,800 MW. Last July, the authority suspended approvals for data center construction requests, and the new framework serves as a compromise that permits construction while curbing strain on infrastructure.

According to estimates, the proposed cap covers half of the 100 applications submitted to the power grid operator Noga, potentially allowing up to 15 facilities to be built at maximum capacity. Industry experts state that the greatest challenge lies in the transmission grid in the central region, while the Negev Desert presents an opportunity to harness renewable energy by directing loads to data centers instead of transmitting electricity northwards, amid fears of depleting gas reserves in less than 20 years.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Megawatt: A unit measuring electrical capacity; one megawatt equals one million watts, and 200 MW is enough power to operate a medium-sized city.

Data Center: A facility housing large numbers of servers that process and store data, consuming massive amounts of electricity around the clock.

Transmission Grid: High-voltage lines that transmit electricity from power plants to cities and major facilities.

Base Load: The minimum constant level of electricity demand below which consumption does not fall, which is increased by facilities operating 24/7 like data centers.
