China's exports grew 14% year-on-year to reach $977.6 billion during the first quarter of 2026, driven by record surges in shipments of electric vehicles, batteries, and advanced manufacturing products.

Chinese customs data revealed that electric vehicle exports grew by more than 40% compared to the same period last year, while China's share of the global battery market surpassed 75% for the first time.

This large trade surplus sparked sharp reactions from China's trading partners; the European Union announced it is considering additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, while the United States expanded the scope of product lists subject to import restrictions.

Asian and African countries and a number of emerging markets are moving to boost their imports from China, taking advantage of competitive prices. However, analysts warn that Western trade protectionism efforts may restrict Chinese export growth in the second half of the year and reshape the global supply chain map.

What do these terms mean?

Trade Balance: The difference between the value of a country's exports and its total imports; a surplus means it sells more abroad than it buys, which contributes to economic growth.

Tariffs: A tax imposed by a government on imported goods to make them more expensive compared to domestic products; countries use them as a tool to protect their industries from foreign competition.

Global Supply Chains: An international network of suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors that enables the production of a single good using components from multiple countries; their disruption increases costs and reduces supplies.
