OpenAI Ends Microsoft Exclusivity and Launches Its Models on Google Cloud

OpenAI has ended the cloud exclusivity agreement that bound it to Microsoft for years and announced the availability of its models, including GPT-6 Astra and the Codex programming tool, on the rival Google Cloud platform. The move allows Google Cloud customers to use OpenAI's models directly from within their environment without needing to deal with Microsoft.

This step comes months after restructuring OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft last April, which capped revenue-sharing payments between the two parties and ended Microsoft's monopoly on hosting OpenAI's cloud infrastructure. OpenAI also recently signed a $38 billion agreement with Amazon to secure additional computing capacity.

With this, OpenAI is now present on the world's three major cloud platforms—Amazon, Google, and Microsoft—in a move reflecting its massive computing power needs to train and run its models, as well as its desire to diversify these resources rather than relying on a single provider that could create a bottleneck or increase negotiation costs.

The move eliminates a competitive advantage Microsoft enjoyed at the expense of its rivals in the cloud computing market, while marking a significant win for Google and Amazon, both of which add OpenAI's massive workloads to their cloud revenue at a time when competition among tech giants intensifies for leadership in the AI race.

What do these terms mean?

**Cloud Computing:** Renting processing power and massive data storage from specialized companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, instead of buying proprietary hardware, which AI companies need to train and operate their models.

**Model Garden Platform:** An AI model marketplace within Google Cloud that allows enterprise customers to choose models from various providers, now including OpenAI models, and use them directly in their applications.

**Contractual Exclusivity:** A clause in a commercial agreement requiring one party to deal exclusively with a single entity for a specified period; ending it opens the door to new partnerships with other parties.
